As you may already know from reading our postings on this web site, car manufacturers and dealers announce new incentives every month. Next month’s deals may be better or worse, or about the same, as this month’s.

We won’t really know what November 2011 car deals will look like until a few days into the month when new incentive programs are announced to dealers.

However, as always, we try to take a look ahead to see what we might expect.

We still haven’t seen the expected incentive war that could be started by Toyota and Honda having now returned to full production after the Japanese earthquake earlier this year. We feel that when they get the pipeline filled and get plenty of cars on dealers’ lots, these companies will begin offering some very attractive car deals to bring customers back to their showrooms. Of course, this will lead other car companies to offer even better incentives to keep customers from running back to Toyota and Honda. It’s going to be interesting, whenever it starts — maybe in November.

Let’s take a look at what we know now.

There are a few good long-term incentives out there that are worth considering. These are typically for left-over 2010 models and come in the form of factory-to-dealer cash that dealers give back to customers as price discounts. The deals expire around December 31 — or when all the vehicles have been sold. Here are some examples:

2010 Nissan 370Z Convertible – $1500 factory to dealer cash

2010 Saab 9-3 Convertible – $6000 factory to dealer cash

2010 Saab 9-3 Sedan and Wagon – $4500 factory to dealer cash

2010 Saab 9-5 Aero Sedan – $5500 factory to dealer cash

2010 Mitsubishi Endeavor – $4500 factory to dealer cash

2010 Mitsubishi Eclipse and Spyder – $3000 factory to dealer cash

2010 Mitsubishi Galant – $3500 factory to dealer cash

2010 Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution and Sportback – $2000 factory to dealer cash

2010 Mitsubishi Outlander – $2000 factory to dealer cash

2010/2011 Mercury Grand Marquis – $5500 factory to dealer cash

2010/2011 Mercury Mariner – $3500 factory to dealer cash

2010/2011 Mercury Milan – $3500 factory to dealer cash

2010 Mercury Milan Hybrid- $5500 factory to dealer cash

If you are interested in any of these deals, you should expect your dealer to give you an additional discount (from his own pocket) on top of the factory-to-cash he’s getting from from his car company.

You can get free price quotes on any of the above cars from Edmunds.comThe quotes will automatically include any cash-back rebates or discounts that are currently available.

Car manufacturers offer limited-time rebates as a way to encourage potential customers to buy now. October 2011 is no exception.

In any given month, some manufacturers really want customers to buy, offering very large rebates that represent a significant discount off of sticker price. These are deals worth considering if you are in the market for a new car.

Rebates are applied at the time a customer buys a car and, in effect, reduce the amount of money needed to purchase the car although, technically, do not reduce the price as would an ordinary price discount. This may seem a trivial distinction but rebates are therefore taxable while discounts are not. In other words, you pay the same sales tax on a car with a rebate as on the same car without a rebate. Just so you know.

Oftentimes, a car manufacturer will offer rebates and low-interest loans at the same time. Customers must choose one or the other, but not both. Generally, large rebates are preferable — and the customer doesn’t have to “qualify” with a high credit score as he does with the low-interest loan.

Here are some of the best rebates being offered for October 2011. In some cases, particularly with the Ford offers, the total rebate may consist of multiple separate rebates and bonuses, such as a trade-in bonus.

Acura is currently offering a variety of special car leases on all models except the TL.

However, only one style within each model line gets the good deals.

One of the special options with each lease offer is that you can choose either nothing due at signing (sign-and-drive) or choose to make a down payment (cap cost reduction) for a lower monthly payment. Nice option in our opinion.

You won’t see this “$0 down lease” option on many other car company’s promotional leases.

All the Acura leases are for 36 months and allow 30,000 miles total. The deals end on October 31.

Here are the current Acura lease deals for October 2011. PMT is monthly payment and DUE is the amount due at signing.

You may already know that when a car manufacturer offers these kinds of special lease deals they require customers to be “highly qualified.” This means they want customers to have a high credit score. If you don’t know your credit score, we suggest you get it before you approach a dealer for one of these lease offers.
However, for October 2011, many of the major automobile companies have already announced their October deals, which are for the most part extensions of their September deals.

The deals come in the form of rebates, low-interest loans, including 0% financing, special lease deals, and “hidden” factory-to-dealer cash (“marketing support”).

We’ll provide more details in the following days as additional car companies announce new incentives but, for now, we can provide a summary of the various offerings that are already available. Most of the current deals expire on October 31, 2011.

BMW – Low-interest loans on 2012 BMW 6-Series and ActiveHybrid 7; lower interest loans on most 2011 models

Such is the case for September — and October.

However, the September deals from Honda are not so much brand new deals as a continuation of many (but not all) of the good deals from August. Actually, the deals are good for both September and October. All deals end on October 31, 2011

Honda’s familiar “zero due at signing” or “$0-$0-$0” leases are back on three models:

2012 Crosstour EX V6 – $330/month (also available at $319/month with $2699 due at signing)

2011 Odyssey LX – $370/month (also available at $259/month with $1999 due at signing)

2012 Pilot EX – $330/month (also available at $259/month with $2699 due at signing)

Other special leases are available on the following models:

2012 Accord Sedan LX – $199/month, $1999 due at signing

2011 CR-V LX – $219/month, $1999 due at signing

These are genuinely good lease deals as determined by LeaseGuide.com. Before you decide to lease, visit LeaseGuide.com to make sure you understand how leasing works and if you are a good candidate for leasing. You should also know your most recent credit score to know if you meet the credit requirements to qualify for these lease deals. You can get your credit score online from companies such as FreeCreditScore.com.

Other than special lease incentives, Honda is also offering low-interest loans on at least one style within each model line. For example, you can get 0.9% for 24-36 months or 1.9% for 37-60 months for the 2011 Accord Coupe, 2011 Accord Sedan, 2011 CR-V, 2011 Fit, 2011 Odyssey, 2011 Crosstour, 2012 Crosstour, and 2011 Pilot. Special rates of 1.9% for 24-36 months or 2.9% for 37-60 months are offered on 2012 models of the Civic Coupe, Civic HF, Civic Sedan, and Civic Si. Low interest loans also require a good credit score, which you can always get online at FreeCreditScore.com.

Car buyers typically know about new-car rebates and low-interest incentives being offered by dealers and car manufacturers because they are heavily advertised and promoted.

However, there is one kind of incentive that is not advertised, at least not directly. We often call it a “hidden rebate” or “secret rebate.” In the auto industry it’s called marketing support or factory-to-dealer cash.

The rebate is “hidden” because it flows directly from the car company to dealers. It is provided to dealers as a way of helping them sell or lease cars. The rebate is not a constant and is not offered on all makes and models. It’s offered on a month by month basis, the same as direct customer rebates. It might be offered one month, and not another. The amount of the “hidden” rebate can vary widely, depending on how badly the manufacturer wants to help sell a particular model vehicle.

Dealers can use marketing support money almost any way they want if it helps sell cars. They could use it to pay for advertising, tent sales, or special promotions. However, most if not all of the money is given to customers as a price discount. When a dealer kicks in his own discount, added to the marketing support discount, customers can walk away with a terrific deal. This is how dealers can sell cars at “below invoice price.”

At the time of this writing, the following manufacturers are providing “hidden rebates” to dealers. These rebates may not apply to all models or styles and often require that the customer finance their purchase or lease through the manufacturer’s finance company (example: Ford Motor Credit).

Honda always has a few good car lease deals every month.

This month, one of the best lease deals is on the 2010 Honda Civic LX 4-door sedan at only $159 a month, with $1840 required as a down payment. When you add in the required first month’s payment, the total amount due up front is $1999.

If the $1999 is a little too much for you, you can opt for a higher monthly payment – $210 a month – and owe $0 up front. It’s the same deal as above except for the elimination of the down payment and first payment requirement.

Either way, this is an outstanding lease deal from Honda. In order to create this low monthly payment on the Civic, they have significantly reduced the price that the lease is based on. Furthermore they have set a low interest rate (lease money factor), and boosted the residual value.

What’s the catch with the monthly Honda lease deals?

The catch is that the special deals only apply, typically, to a single style within each model line, usually the middle-of-the-line model, the LX. And if it’s the end of the model year, the deal is typically on the older model. However, since models do not change significantly from year to year, this is not a great sacrifice.

Honda vehicles nearly always make great lease vehicles, even without special deals, because they have some of the highest lease-end residual values (resale values) of any car brand. Compared to other brands, such as Chevrolet or Ford, at the same price points, Honda will always win the lease cost battle.

If you don’t understand how car leasing works, we strongly recommend that you visit LeaseGuide.com before making a decision to lease.

As of this writing, most 2011 new-car models are now out and many dealers still have leftover 2010 models, for which some excellent deals can be had.

However, Ford dealers still have leftover 2009 vehicles. Yes, that’s right — 2009 vehicles. They are currently offering huge discounts on those vehicles. The only catch is that you might not be able to find exactly the model, style, options, and color you want. The key to success is to be flexible and be willing to take what you can find.

Although you might balk at buying what seems to be a 2 year old car, these are brand new cars with full manufacturer’s warranty and lemon law protection. In some cases, styling hasn’t changed much, if any, in two years and the cars still look like this year’s models.

For these leftover 2009 cars, Ford gives dealers a “hidden” factory-to-dealer rebate (“marketing support”) that dealers then use to discount prices to customers.

Following are examples of the current Ford factory-to-dealer rebates for leftover 2009 models:

Ford Explorer, F-150, Mustang – up to $5500

Ford Edge, Flex, Ranger – up to $4000

Ford Expedition, Focus – up to $3500

Ford Explorer Sport Trac – up to $2500

Lincoln Town Car – $8000

Lincoln Navigator – $6500

Lincoln MKS, MKX, MKZ – up to $5500

Mercury Grand Marquis, Mountaineer – $5500-$6500

We’ll say right up front — the best deals this time of year are ALWAYS going to be on last year’s leftover models, as we’ve discussed in previous articles on this site. This is the time when new models are coming out and dealers still have old models to sell.

Most dealers now have large incentives on leftover 2010 models where 2011 models are already out. Ford even has some big deals on leftover 2009 models, where available. The deals are outstanding but you might not have a big choice in colors or styles. Being flexible is the key to getting the best deals.

However, this doesn’t mean that good deals can’t be had on new models too.

For example, we’re seeing some great incentives and rebates on 2011 models from Chrysler and General Motors. These deals expire on November 1, 2010.

Chrysler currently has rebates in the range of $1000-$2000 on the 2011 Dodge Dakota and Nitro, Jeep Liberty, and Ram 1500,2500, and 3500. Chrysler also is offering low-interest loans on these 2011 models.

General Motors has rebates of up to $2500 on Buick Lucerne, Buick Enclave, Chevrolet Avalanche, Chevrolet Silverado, Chevrolet Malibu, Traverse, Impala, Colorado, Aveo, and Cruze. Reabtes up to $2500 are also available on GMC Acadia, Sierra, Yukon and Canyon.

In addition, General Motors also has “hidden” factory-to-dealer” rebates on the 2011 Cadillac CTS, DTS, STS ($3500), Cadillac Escalade ($2000), and Chevrolet Aveo, Corvette, HHR, and Impala ($4000).

General Motors is also offering low-interest loans, including 0% APR rates, on most of the above 2011 models.

Mercedes does not want to project the image of a discount car brand. Therefore, the incentives currently being offered for October 2009 are a bit subtle, but nevertheless good deals.

They don’t offer direct factory-to-customer rebates but, instead, offer some very good low-APR loans and a number of very hefty hidden factory-to-dealer cash rebates, which dealers usually give back to customers as price discounts. All the current deals end 11/02/2009 and apply to most Mercedes models, but not all.

The factory-to-dealer cash incentives are all on 2009 models that need to be sold to make room for new 2010 models. However, most 2010 models have low-interest loan deals. Be aware that all the Mercedes low-interest rate deals contain a 1% reserve (dealer markup) and you might be able to negotiate some or all of that markup out of your deal. For example, you might be able to turn a 1.9% rate into a 0.9% rate.

Here are examples of the new October Mercedes incentives. Remember, these incentives may not apply to all styles within a model class.

2009 Mercedes C-Class - $3500 factory-to-dealer cash

2010 Mercedes C-Class – low-interest loan rate: 1.9% APR for 24/36 months and 2.9% for 60 months

2009 Mercedes E-Class – $10,000 dealer cash

2010 Mercedes E-Class – 3.9% APR loan rate for 24/36/60 months

2009 Mercedes GL-Class – $10,000 dealer cash

2010 Mercedes GL-Class – 2.9% APR loan rate for 24/36 months and 3.9% for 60 months

2010 Mercedes GLK-Class – 1.9% APR loan rate for 24/36 months and 2.9% for 60 months

2009 Mercedes M-Class – $6000 dealer cash

2010 Mercedes M-Class – 1.9% APR loan rate for 24/36 months and 2.9% for 60 months

2009 Mercedes S550 – $14,000 dealer cash

2009 Mercedes SL550 – $15,000 dealer cash

2009 Mercedes R-Class – $10,000 dealer cash

2009 Mercedes SLK-Class – 1.9% APR loan rate for 24/36 months and 2.9 loan rate for 60 months

You can get free price quotes on any of the Mercedes vehicles from Edmunds.com.

Acura has chimed in with new October incentives on all models, including many 2010 models. All of the new programs end on November 2, 2009.

The incentives include low-interest loans, special lease deals, and factory-to-dealer cash that dealers can pass along to customers as price discounts. Acura, like most other luxury car makers, doesn’t want to be viewed as a “discount” brand. Therefore, they offer no direct factory-to-customer rebates but, instead, offer other ways of creating attractive deals.

The new Acura incentives are a little out of the ordinary in a couple of ways. First, the factory-to-dealer cash is only offered on 2009 models that the dealer already had in inventory as late as September 9, 2009. The cash rebates, therefore, provide incentive for dealers to to get rid of “old” cars that have been sitting on the lot for a month or more — by using the rebate as a price discount for customers.

The second way in which the new Acura incentives are different is that customers can combine the factory-to-dealer cash with low-interest loans. Such combinations are not usually allowed.

Here is a summary of the new Acura deals. All apply to 2009 models unless otherwise indicated.

Acura MDX – $2000 conditional factory-to-dealer cash rebate (see above discussion of special conditions of this rebate), and 1.9% APR loan rate for 24/36 months and 2.9% for 60 months. A special lease deal is available for the Base model: $469 a month, 36 months, 10K mileage allowance, and $3299 due at signing, which includes the first month’s payment, a down payment (cap cost reduction), and a bank fee (acquisition fee).

Acura RDX – $1500 conditional dealer cash (see above discussion). For the 2010 RDX Base model, a special lease deal is available: $399 a month, $3599 due at signing.

Acura RL – $3000 conditional dealer cash. For the 2010 RL, $2000 dealer cash and a special lease deal: $569 a month, $3999 due at signing.

Acura TL – $2000 conditional dealer cash and low interest loan rates: 1.9% APR for 24/36 months and 2.9% for 60 months. The same low APR rates also apply to the 2010 TL but not the dealer cash.

Acura TSX – $1250 conditional dealer cash. For the 2010 TSX, two special lease deals are offered for October. For the 2010 TSX Base 2.4L 4-cylinder auto transmission, $299 a month, $3599 due at signing. For the 2010 TSX Base 3.5L 6-cylinder auto transmission, $359 a month, $3799 due at signing.

If you don’t understand how car leasing works and would like to learn, we suggest LeaseGuide.com. The site contains a free guide to car leasing and payment calculators.

Audi is now offering good deals on it’s 2009 models (until November 2) in the form of loyalty rebates, factory-to-dealer cash, and low interest loans. There are no incentives on 2010 models at this time.

Just to be clear, the “loyalty” rebates being offered are for current owners or leasers of 2003 or newer Audi vehicles. The vehicles do not have to be traded to qualify.

As is typical of Audi, the company does not want to be viewed as a discount car brand. Therefore they don’t offer straight out rebates. However, along with the “loyalty” rebates, they currently have generous factory-to-dealer cash that dealer’s usually pass along to customers in the form of price discounts (not rebates).

Let’s take a look at the new October Audi deals:

Audi A3 – $1000 customer loyalty bonus rebate, $2500 factory-to-dealer cash, and 0.9% APR loan rate for 12/36 months, 1.4% for 48 months, and 1.9% for 60 months.

Audi A4 – $2000 loyalty rebate, $5000 dealer cash, and 0.9% APR loans for 12/36/48/60 months.

Audi A5 – $1500 loyalty rebate, $1000 dealer cash, and 3.9% APR for 12/36 months, 4.4% for 48 months, and 4.9% for 60 months.

Audi A6 – $3000 loyalty rebate, $4000 dealer cash, and 1.9% APR for 12/36 months, 2.4% for 48 months, and 2.9% for 60 months.

Audi A8 – $5000 loyalty rebate, $5000 dealer cash, and 1.9% APR for 12/36 months, 2.4% for 48 months, and 2.9% for 60 months.

Audi Q5 – $1000 loyalty bonus, $1000 dealer cash, and 3.9% APR for 12/36 months, 4.4% for 48 months, and 4.9% for 60 months.

Audi Q7 – $5000 loyalty bonus, $4000 dealer cash, and 1.9% APR for 12/36 months, 2.4% for 48 months, and 2.9% for 60 months.

Audi S6 – $4000 loyalty bonus, $4000 dealer cash, and 2.9% APR for 12/36 months, 3.4% for 48 months, and 3.9% for 60 months.

Audi S8 – $5000 loyalty bonus, $5000 dealer cash, and 2.9% APR for 12/36 months, 3.4% for 48 months, and 3.9% for 60 months.

Audi TT – $2000 loyalty bonus, $3000 dealer cash, and 0.9% APR for 12/36 months, 1.4% for 48 months, and 1.9% for 60 months.

Audi TTS – $2000 loyalty bonus, no dealer cash, and 0.9% APR for 12/36 months, 1.4% for 48 months, and 1.9% for 60 months.

General Motors is offering incentives on the Pontiac brand for October in the form of direct customer rebates, factory-to-dealer rebates, and not-so-low interest loans.

There are no special lease deals.

All 2009 model Pontiacs get a 5.9% APR loan rate for qualified customers for 36/48/60/72 months. This is lower than the current average new-car loan rate of about 7.5%, but not significantly less. Most customers will be better to take the alternative rebate.

All Pontiac models also get a $500 factory-to-dealer rebate, which dealers can do with as they like. However, these direct-to-dealer rebates usually end up being passed on to customers as a price discount (not rebate).

There are also factory-to-customer rebates as well. The amount varies by model. The 2009 Pontiac G3, G5, Solstice, Torrent, and Vibe all have a $2500 rebate, while the 2009 Pontiac G6 and G8 have a $3500 rebate.

The above Pontiac incentives end November 2, 2009.

In typical Honda fashion, there are no direct customer rebates. However there are hidden factory-to-dealer rebates on most models and styles — and low-interest loans. These rebates can, and usually are, passed along to buying and leasing customers in the form of price discounts. However the rebates cannot be combined with low-interest loan deals.

Following are some examples of current Honda deals. These are for 2009 models and the deals end on November 2, 2009.

Honda Accord – $1500 dealer rebate or 1.9% APR loan for 24/36 months, or 2.9% for 60 months. For the Accord LX sedan model, a special lease deal is available – $209 a month, 36 months, 12K mileage allowance, and $2799 due at signing. The $2799 includes first month’s payment, a down payment (cap cost reduction), and a bank fee, all of which are common for any car lease. The lease price includes the $1500 dealer rebate.

Honda CRV – $500 dealer rebate. No low-interest loans. A special lease rate is available for the CRV LX model – $239 a month, $2499 due at signing.

Honda Civic – $750 factory-to-dealer rebate. Low interest loans: 1.9% APR for 24/36 months and 2.9% for 60 months. A special lease deal is available for the LX sedan model – $199 a month, $1999 due at signing, and includes the $750 factory-to-dealer rebate.

Honda Element and Fit – Low-APR loans for recent college graduates.

Honda Odyssey – $1250 factory-to-dealer rebate or 2.9% APR loan for 24/60 months

2010 Honda Odyssey LX - Special lease deal: $299 a month, $2999 due at signing.

2010 Honda Insight LX - Special lease deal: $199 a month, $2799 due at signing.

Honda Pilot – $1250 dealer rebate or 2.9% APR for 24/60 months.

Honda Ridgeline – $1500 dealer rebate or 2.9% APR for 24/60 months.

You can get free price quotes on any of the above Honda vehicles from Edmunds.com.

General Motors has announced good incentives and deals for October, in the form of cash-back rebates and low-interest loans. As usual, you can accept either the cash-back or the low APR loan, but not both.

Another incentive is a little unusual — a $500 cash rebate if the buyer wants to decline the General Motors 60-Day Satisfaction Guarantee. We would advise buyers who are not absolutely, totally, unquestionably sure they will want to keep the car to keep the 60-day guarantee and turn down the $500.

In general, the incentives are somewhat better than last month’s and apply in many cases to both 2010 and 2009 models, although the 2010 deals are not as good. In some cases, such as on the hot new 2010 Camaro, there are no incentives except the previously mentioned $500 for waiving the GM 60-day satisfaction guarantee.

All current GM incentives end on November 2, 2009 and are subject to change during that time. Furthermore, incentives may vary, depending on the area of the country. Low-APR loans are also subject to customer credit score requirements.

Following are examples of current (October) Chevrolet new-car incentives (2009 models except where noted) :

Chevrolet Avalanche – $3500 customer cash-back rebate or 2.9% APR loan rate for 36/48/60 months and 4.9% for 72 months

2010 Chevrolet Avalanche – $1000 rebate or 4.9% APR (36/48/60 months) and 6.9% for 72 months

Chevrolet Aveo – $1500 rebate or 5.9% APR

Chevrolet Cobalt – $1500 rebate

Chevrolet Corvette – $4000 cash-back rebate or 0% APR for 36/48/60 months (3.9% for 72 months)

Chevrolet Equinox – $2500 customer rebate or 4.9% APR for 36/48/60 months

Chevrolet HHR – $2000 rebate or 3.9% APR for 36/48/60 months

Chevrolet Impala – $2500 rebate or 4.9% for 36/48/60 months

Chevrolet Malibu – $1500 rebate plus $1000 bonus cash or 3.9% APR for 36/48/60 months

Chevrolet Silverado 1500 – $3500 rebate plus $1000 bonus or 2.9% APR for 36/48/60 months and 4.9% for 72 months

Chevrolet Tahoe – $1500 rebate plus up to $4500 bonus cash or 5.9% APR for 36/48/60 months

Chevrolet Trailblazer – $3500 rebate or 2.9% APR for 36/48/60 months and 4.9% for 72 months

Chevrolet Traverse – $2000 rebate or 5.9% for 36/48/60 months

You can get free dealer price quotes on any of the above Chevrolet vehicles from Edmunds.com.
